Utah Rocket Club Black Rock Launch - UR NUTS

About this event

Utah Rocket Club's - Black Rock Launch (UR NUTS!) will be taking place in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, on October 8,9,and 10th, 2021! You can fly your projects up to 100 thousand feet (higher with pre-approved paperwork).

Here are some details:

Everyone attending needs to register regardless of whether that person is flying or not. BLM requires a fee per person, per day. This registration covers that.

There will be a porta potty on site but water will not be available. You need to bring your own.

Camping at the launch site is allowed. The only accommodations are located in Gerlach, Nevada and may have limited availability (call soon).

Everyone coming will be expected to help set up, tear down, and run the launch. This will be a small launch, limited to a total of 50 people.

COVID-19 precautions will be in effect for this launch.  We will continue monitoring the latest mandates as we get closer to the launch.

All those attending the launch are expected to have a great time and to be safe.

Please register TODAY if you are planning on going. If we don't get enough people registered we won't be going, so it's important we have an accurate count of the people planning on it. Don't worry, if you register and the launch is canceled for any reason UROC will provide a full refund.

If for some reason, weather or other, we can not launch on Oct 8-10, we will hold the launch the following weekend Oct 15-17.  Your registration and payment will be automatically moved to the OCT 15-17 alternative launch date.

Please take note, the current BLM restrictions are in effect at Black Rock Playa.

Directions to the Launch Site

The directions below assume you first get to Gerlach NV, USA.

(A) *Gerlach NV - 40 39.127'N 119 21.363'W

Use Google maps of other navigation to get here first. After this use NV country road 34 to get to the 12 mile Playa entrance.

(B) *12 MI Entrance - 40 46.334'N 119 15.756'W - Note, the 12 mile entrance has a couple ruts.  It was reported at BALLS it was usable even for low ground clearance cars.  However, if you'd rather, you can use the 8 MI Entrance to the playa.

This is the best entrance to use to get to the site. Drive straight in and to the NE. There is a bumpy intersection that goes to the Burning Man site, do NOT turn right!  The speed limit is 20 MPH for safety to the Burning Man cleanup crew and to keep the dust down. The road will go about 1 mile in and start a gentle bend to the NNE. This takes us to the next way-point 1.4mi in.

(C) *West Road Bend - 40 47.108'N 119 14.524'W

This is the center of the bend more to the NNE. After this it will straighten out and you drive up to the next point 3.5 mi NE.

(D) *Turn East to launch site - 40 49.572'N 119 12.167'W

*This is supposed to be at the location where the double pylon marker is in the road, and the tire. At this point we drive about to the NE 4.4 miles directly to the launch site.

(E) Launch Site - Latitude 40°51'34.8"N  / Longitude 119°03'19.0"W (in decimal format 40.8596705, -119.0552625).  We'll find a good spot near the "center" of the playa near, on or between those 2 coordinates.  When we find the final site, we will post here and on FB UROC page.  Keep Kip's and Paul's cell phone numbers handy if you need help when you get out here.
